Aircraft Carrier Hullform Generation

For aircraft carriers I have broken the hullform into two parts as shown in the annotagted image below of the future USS Ford prior to her commissioning.  This includes;
  • the main hull
  • the sponsons and overhanging deck structure

For the main hull, the hullform development method used in the spreadsheet for aircraft carriers is based on the same method that I've put together for surface combatants as described at this link.  However, I have made a couple modifications to better reflect a hullform that appears suitable for an aircraft carrier type hull and which better matches up to the rest of the calculations in the spreadsheet. 

Specifically, bow and transom rake have been set to match output from the Length Overall calculations and the Flight Deck arrangements caluclations.

Additionally, I have included an additional "2nd Deck" level approximately one deck (10ft/3.048m) below the flight deck that is assumed to be the same size and shape as the Main Deck, as shown below.  This is done to simplying the upper hull geometry and as an attempt to "replicate" (in a simplified fashion) the general hull shapes of many newer aircraft carriers as shown in the image of the USS G.H.W, Bush (CVN-77), below.

Finally, the shape of the sections above the design waterline have been modified within the spreadsheet for sections forward of midships, in order to make them taper into the main deck shape better.   A sample output hullform for a medium sized aircraft carrier is shown below, demonstrating these changes.


An effort was also undertaken to clean up the Bulkhead and Deck tabs of the spreadsheet, which allow the user to make cuts at various longitudinal and vertical locations which may assist in visualizing the space available for items such as machinery spaces and aircraft hangars etc.  (Eventually I hope to try and provide additional information in the spreadsheet for laying out these type items).  Sample bulkhead and wateline cuts developed in the spreadsheet are shown below for reference.
