Aircraft Carrier w500 (Auxiliary Systems) Weight EstimatingI have broken the w500 Auxiliary Systems weight estimating into three major sections, as follows;
The methods for estimating the weights of an auxiliary steam system and other associated systems to allow the use of steam catapults on a non-steam propelled vessel are descirbed at this link: Primary w500 (Auxiliary Systems) Weight EstimatingSimilar to SWBS Group 100 weights, for estimating a design's SWBS Group 500 Auxiliary Systems weight I have taken the weight data provided in Ref CV1 and modified it into to groups as defined below;w500r = which represents the base (or remaining) SWBS Group 500 weight of a ship after the weight impacts of a ship's Elevator/Lifts (a portion of SWBS 588), Catapults (SWBS 587) , and Arrestor Gear (SWBS 586) plus the portion of the Operating Fluids (SWBS 598) and Spare Parts and Spacial Tools (SWBS 599) associated with the SWBS 586, 587 and 588 weights for that design. w500+ = the portion of SWBS 500 weight due to the the installation of Catapults, Arrestor Gear, and Lifts/Elevators (which gets 'added to' the w500r to give the total w500 ship weight. The 1st figure below shows both the Total w500 weight and the w500r weight for the vessels that I have weight information for versus Hullform Parameter. The Blue data points represent the total w500 weight for vessels with Axial Decks including two large deck amphibious vessels and two STOVL type vessels. The Red data points represent the total w500 data for several CATOBAR type angled deck vessels with relatively large sponsons. The Green data points represent the w500r data for all these vessels and designs. As shown in this figure while there appears to be a fair bit of difference in the trendlines for total w500 weight for axial deck and sponsoned deck vessels, the w500r data points appear to fall reasonably close to a single trendline for all the vessels when using the Hullfrom Parameter. the 2nd plot shows the data for w500r only to provide a clearer view of this data and the trendline developed. For a new design, Group w500+ data can be determined from the data listed on the Aircraft Lifts/Elevators, Catapults & Ski Ramps, and Arrestor Gear webpages.
